The Scottish Highland Games or Heavy Events are the modern continuation of an ancient Celtic tradition. Each event tests the athlete's strength and skill. It may seem that the sport requires brute strength alone, but developing good technique is essential to succeeding in the games.

There are 3 classes of competition - "C" for beginners, "B" for intermediate, and once the athletes have acheived a high degree of proficiency they are moved up to "A" class. There is also a women's class, where they do all the events that the men do, only they use proportionately lighter weights.

The events are: Tossing the Caber, Weight for Distance, Putting the Stone, Scottish Hammer, and the Farmers Walk.

The Scottish American Athletic Association (SAAA) is an organization of Heavy Events athletes. Its purpose is to promote the sport and provide for the best interests of the athlete by sanctioning athletic events. It certifies judges, establishes standardized rules, weighs and certifies implements, records and publishes game scores and much more.

Members of the SAAA provide information at the Games, as you enjoy the marvels of strength and skill, so that you may understand and appreciate what these traditional events are all about. If you would like to join the SAAA or have other questions, please click here to contact Dave Garman, President, or here to visit saaa-net.org.
